CNL News Lesson

Lesson Outline

February 20, 2013

Beats by Dre HeadphonesOne of the advantages of online news is that the amount of space that a story can use is unlimited, allowing for the addition of photos, videos, and other supplemental information that stands to enhance the credibility of the story. It can sometimes be overwhelming, but can also add a lot to a story.

The story for this lesson, posted February 7, 2013 on the technology news blog Gizmodo details the creation of the popular "Beats" headphones, which were created by the Monster Cable Products company, and branded through a partnership with rapper Dr. Dre and Interscope Records chairman Jeremy Iovine. However, the partnership was short lived through the naiveté of a young chairman of Monster Cable, Kevin Lee upon inking a deal that eventually pushed the premium A/V cable company out of one of it's most successful products.

This 3,000 word story may be on the long side for younger high school aged youth, but it's subject and amount of source material provided by the writer Sam Biddle makes for a compelling story and a good example of a platform being used to it's full potential in the presentation of the story. We have formatted the story from the blog into a easy to print PDF (17 pages in total).
